About Marcia Nißen

Dr. Marcia Nißen is the Core Director of Digital Female Health at the Centre for Digital Health Interventions. This fall, she will be a lecturer at CAS ETH in Digital Health, teaching the development and implementation of just-in-time adaptive digital health interventions. Dr. Nißen obtained her PhD at ETH Zurich and her bachelor’s and master’s at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

About the Lecture

For decades, women’s health has been overlooked in healthcare research and industries (World Economic Forum, 2024), leading to limited data and notable disparities in medical studies and technologies affecting female health, well-being, and behaviour (Innovation Equity Forum, 2023). Especially menstrual health has long been called for to be recognized as a health endpoint and a risk factor for women’s general health and well-being (Harlow & Ephross, 1995) – a “fifth vital sign” being as important as pulse, temperature, breathing rate, and blood pressure (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, 2015).

With the Digital Female Health CORE, we aim to enable researchers and women including individuals assigned female at birth to study and understand the interactions between hormonal fluctuations and other physiological processes by integrating Digital Health Technologies. A significant percentage of menstruating people already use an array of apps, wearables, and platforms to track their cycles (Statista, 2024), to manage their menstrual health, and to align lifestyle behaviors with their menstrual cycle phases. Yet, the lack of evidence for personalized cycle-phase specific interventions (Geertz, Iyer, Kasen, Mazzola, & Peterson, 2016) and the absence of standards defining adequate and effective digital menstrual health and cycle tracking is concerning (Schmalenberger et al., 2021) – a research gap we aim to close.
