About Dr. Karin Bosshard

Dr. Karin Bosshard’s interests are all about innovations enabled by combining the right data with the right tools and the right people for enhancing health. Her professional experience ranges from digital health solutions across the diagnostics industry and pharmaceutical industry. At F. Hoffmann-La Roche Karin has led several projects related to data science and enabling technologies for data-driven digital health products. Karin is driving company-wide activities enabling the use of real-world data (in contrast to data from clinical trials). In her current role, Karin focuses on beyond-product activities which catalyze healthcare systems’ readiness to absorb digital health solutions for precision medicine.

Prior to F. Hoffmann-La Roche, Karin worked for McKinsey & Company focusing on the healthcare sector. Karin’s academic background is economics, business and law. Aiming to understand the levers affecting the adaptation of precision medicine she dedicated her PhD to “Law and Economics of Personalized Medicine”.

Karin is a regular lecturer at the University of St. Gallen and board member at VIRTUSAN – an early stage start-up focusing on helping people to create healthy habits.

About the lecture

The lecture is dedicated to the opportunities and challenges of “BigPharma” in the space of “digital health” and gives a glimpse of the path F. Hoffmann-La Roche has taken so far. Across the industry the term “digital health” is interpreted differently comprising a diverse set of products and services ranging from preventive to reactive health and from provider (e.g., clinical decision support) to patient facing applications (e.g., patient monitoring). Some industry participants have opted to stay on the venture capital side, whereas other companies are more actively investing in in-house capabilities.

The lecture will illustrate a diagnostics and pharmaceuticals player’s unique strengths and opportunities, such as using domain expertise, in-depth knowledge of healthcare data and a long-term experimentation mindset. Counter to that, internal challenges will be discussed, such as adapting old processes to new products, as well as external challenges such as lagging policies, the lack of healthcare data infrastructure, in addition to the need for a change of mindsets and workflows.

We are pleased to invite you to join this guest lecture. Registration is not required. If you have any questions, please contact Olivia Keller (olkeller@ethz.ch) prior to the start of the guest lecture.
