About Thomas Züger

Dr. Thomas Züger works as a senior physician at the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology, Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (UDEM) of the University Hospital in Bern, Switzerland. In addition to his broad clinical activities in various medical disciplines, research has always been an integral part of his work. His research focuses mainly on diabetes and metabolism with a particular interest in diabetes-technology, encompassing continuous glucose monitoring, artificial pancreas systems and dysglycemia prediction. This also resulted in a close collaboration with the Center for Digital Health Interventions (CDHI) at the ETH Zürich and the implementation of projects aiming at reducing the burden of diabetes-related complications. Furthermore, he is interested in diabetes and exercise. In this context he is involved in the scientific and medical care of an all-diabetes professional cycling team. These interests are also reflected in his leisure activities as a passionate cyclist and backcountry skier.

About the Lecture

Numerous advances during the last decades led to a continuous improvement and flexibility of diabetes therapy. Especially the rapid technological progress provided new opportunities in the treatment of patients suffering from type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The introduction and further development of subcutaneous insulin infusion systems (CSII) and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) were essential cornerstones in the field. This enabled the establishment of artificial pancreas systems by connecting these devices to an integrative control algorithm. Furthermore, the broad availability of smartphones and wearables as well as the increasing connectivity between devices with integration of artificial intelligence offers additional opportunities in the field of diabetes technology, further allowing for the development of applications supporting the patients in diabetes-management. The lecture focusses on the clinical perspective of this development and elaborates the arising opportunities as well as the effect on the doctor-patient relation.
