About the Lecture
The lecture by PD Dr. med. Mathias Schlögl will delve into three critical areas in healthcare: communication problems with older patients, the need for empathy in healthcare, and the evaluation of AI chatbot responses in patient care.
In the first part, Dr. Schlögl will address the challenges of communicating with older patients. He will discuss common barriers and practical strategies toimprove interactions, enhancing both patient satisfaction and healthcare outcomes.
The second part of the lecture will focus on the necessity of empathy in healthcare. Dr. Schlögl will highlight the impact of empathy on patient care and physician well-being, emphasizing the importance of empathy training and supportive practices within medical education.
In the third segment, Dr. Schlögl will explore a groundbreaking study on the use of an artificial intelligence chatbot assistant in healthcare. The study compares the quality and empathy of chatbot responses to those provided by physicians on a social media forum. The results suggest that AI chatbots can offer responses that are preferred for their quality and empathy, potentially easing the burden on healthcare professionals and improving patient engagement.
The final part of the lecture will present an overview of the Digital Therapeutics (DTx) Project at the University of St. Gallen, Spring 2023. This interdisciplinaryinitiative involves collaboration among students from various fields, including computer science, psychology, and medicine, to develop evidence-based DTx solutions. Dr. Schlögl will share insights from his work on DTx for families coping with delirium and discuss the broader implications of digital health technologies in managing non-communicable diseases and mental health disorders. This project emphasizes the integration of technology and healthcare to create scalable, cost-effective treatments tailored to individual needs.
