A warm welcome to Michal Bechny

We are delighted to welcome Michal Bechny as a postdoctoral researcher to the Centre for Digital Health Interventions (CDHI) at ETH Zürich, as part of the Core Digital Biomarkers in Driver Health and Safety. His focus is applied machine learning for detecting driving impairment and monitoring drug effects on cognitive and driving performance. He leverages explainable artificial intelligence to develop digital biomarkers, ranging from markers of sleep and cardiovascular diseases to indicators of impairment and the effects of pharmacological and behavioural interventions.
He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Bern, where his work focused on clinical validation of algorithmic solutions and quantifying sleep dynamics as a novel biomarker of various clinical conditions. Before joining CDHI, he worked as a Doctoral Researcher at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) in collaboration with the University Hospital of Bern (Inselspital), and completed a research stay at the University of Tokyo.
Previously, he worked as a Researcher and Data Scientist at the Software Competence Center Hagenberg, contributing to industrial projects on online outlier detection, forecasting, and real-time pattern recognition. He holds an MSc in Statistics/Data Science from Johannes Kepler University Linz (Austria).
He values interdisciplinary work that bridges data-driven methods with domain expertise to support reliable decision-making in real-world settings.
Outside of research, he enjoys spending time in the mountains, cycling, and cooking and enjoying good food.
