An Update from Robin Deuber on his Stanford Research Stay

Robin Deuber visiting Stanord

Congratulations to PhD student Robin Deuber on his research visit to Stanford University!  Recently, he shared some updates on his time in California.  Read on for all the details!

One month ago, I began my research visit at the Center for Design Research at Stanford University’s School of Engineering. During my stay, I’m advancing my research in the domain of machine learning-based driver state detection.

While continuing my research on drunk driving and enhancing the performance of our detection algorithms, I’m also collaborating on Dr. Rebecca Currano’s projects investigating mind-wandering among vehicle occupants. This research explores how gaze behavior and physiological signals can reveal states of mind wandering.

The motivation for my work is clear: human error accounts for approximately 94% of traffic accidents. Effective driver state detection is crucial for enhancing road safety and reducing the likelihood of accidents. Additionally, accurately assessing driver readiness is fundamental to safely deploying semi-autonomous driving systems, particularly when human intervention may be required promptly.

Thus far, my experience at Stanford has been outstanding. The university provides exceptional research facilities and a supportive environment complemented by extensive sports, wellness, and residential programs. Its beautiful and vibrant campus creates an inspiring intellectual atmosphere, ideally situated in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Special thanks to the Bosch Lab, especially Prof. Felix Wortmann and Dr. Wolfgang Bronner, as well as Prof. Elgar Fleisch, Prof. Florian von Wangenheim, and the Centre for Digital Health Interventions for their support in making this possible.

I look forward to the exciting months ahead!
